Stonefields is a modern, master-planned suburb about 8 kilometres south-east of the Auckland CBD (postcode 1072), developed from the former Winstone quarry from around 2008. The quarry — which extracted basalt from a lava flow off the Maungarei / Mount Wellington volcano — opened in 1936 and closed in 2001, and the residential community that followed sits directly below Mount Wellington, with St Johns and Glen Innes as neighbours and Meadowbank, Remuera and Ellerslie nearby.
